What is Photo Rejuvenation ?
Photo-rejuvenation is a professional skin treatment that uses intense pulsed light or other thermal or chemical methods to treat some skin conditions arising from photoaging. The process induces controlled micro-injuries to the skin, prompting it to heal itself by creating new cells and eventually fresher and more youthful skin.
This process may also reverse the effects of photoaging to a certain extent by minimizing lines and wrinkles.
Intense Pulse Light , known as IPL, is an exciting new procedure designed to produce younger and healthier looking skin within 4-6 monthly sessions.
As most of us age, we begin to see small but visible signs of sun damage appearing in our complexion. This may include freckles, , Mild to severe hyper- pigmentation, Rosacea, wrinkles, broken capillaries, dark spots, blotchy skin color, redness of the face and neck, enlarged pore size and over all sun damage.
Photo rejuvenation now a days is a common procedure that can treat vascular redness, pigmented brown spots, sun damage and the collagen re-structuring all at the same time. With the use of the new IPL™ technology, dramatic improvements can now be accomplished with little or no “downtime” and with minimal discomfort.
IPL systems work on the same principles as lasers in that light energy is absorbed into particular target cells with colour (chromophores) in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which causes damage to the specific target area.
IPL systems are called “broad band” and are different to lasers in that they deliver many wavelengths (or colours) in each pulse of light instead of just one wavelength. Most IPL systems use filters to refine the energy output for the treatment of certain areas. This enhances penetration without using excessive energy levels and enables targetting of specific chromophores (these are skin components that absorb light).
Treatment Information:
How much improvement can I expect?
Patients with minimal skin imperfections and blotchy or uneven texture along with facial blood vessels can expect great improvement. Those with severe wrinkles, hyper pigmented and large spider veins will require a more assertive treatment program on a monthly basis.
Will I have any discomfort?
IPL therapy is considered a non-ablative resurfacing technique, which means that it targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) without affecting the top layers of skin (epidermis). The results are not as dramatic as ablative resurfacing where both the dermis and epidermis are injured to produce a much more noticeable overall outcome. The advantage of IPL therapy is its minimal downtime – a patient can often have the procedure done in their lunch break and return to work immediately afterwards.
After or before the procedure, some patients prefer ice packs and a topical aesthetic cream like Emla. No aesthetic needles are required. Lightmineral make up foundation can be used after the procedure if is neccasary.
How to prepare for treatment sessions:
In most cases , a facial skin care program will be outlined for you that can be started before you commence your treatments and also be used as a maintenance program.
The face should be clean and free of all make up. if you are extremly sensitive, Emla can be applied to the planned treatment areas 30-60 minutes prior to your sessions.
You must avoid tanning before and after your “LIGHT RELATED FACIALS” as this will enhance unwanted blotchiness, hyper pigmenation.
How often can the treatments be performed?
For most patients 3-5 treatment sessions spaced at 3-4 weeks apart create the best result. Looking after your face is like maintaining your teeth or your beloved car. A repeat “IPL” may be required once a year plus your personal facial program must be reviewed for you.
Side Effects:
What are the side effects?
The appearance of skin right after treatment is similar to what you will see after a good exercise workout. The flushing and redness will last from a few minutes to several hours after treatment. If your skin is quite loose, you may experience some swelling. Brown age spots and uneven pigmentation will turn slightly darker after treatment.
Side effects are minor and include:
- Pain during treatment (reduced by contact cooling and if necessary, topical anaesthetic)
- Skin turning pink and a little sore immediately after the procedure.
- Sensation of a mild sunburn (redness, peeling, swelling) that may last a few days after treatment.
- Rarely, skin pigment may absorb too much light energy and blistering can occur.
- Sometimes the pigment cells (melanocytes) can be damaged leaving darker or paler patches of skin. White patches or scars are rarely permanent.
- Hair loss may occur.
- Bruising or swelling affects up to 10% of patients
